⬇️Dear Teacher, It’s testing season. High stakes testing season at that. When you aren’t giving district and state standardized tests, you are giving EOY progress monitoring testing. It’s a stressful time. You have poured your heart into your students this year. You have given everything you have. I want to remind you while tests give you a lot of data there are a lot of things that it doesn’t measure. Testing doesn’t measure: - the relationships built this year. - the confidence you’ve instilled in your students. - the compassion you show your students. - the sleepless nights you spent worrying about someone else’s child. - the extra hours you stayed after work. - how much you love your students. While testing shows a lot of things , it doesn’t show everything. You tell your students they are more than their test scores. You need to remember that you are more than your test scores too. READ THE CAPTION Testing season is a high stress time for admin, teachers, and students thanks to high stakes testing. Continue farther is a discussion for another post. Here are the three things that I would focus on when getting a newcomer during testing season: 1. BREATHE - You are stressed and your students are stressed. Breathe because you get to choose how you respond. Remember in and out. Breathe in through your nose for a four count and blow out through your mouth for a four count. Repeat until your shoulders are relaxed. 2. Now that you are in a fight/flight response, REMEMBER that you are a highly qualified educator. What would you do get to know a new student? They read/write in a different language? Cool, take a picture of what they wrote and highlight the text in the picture and your phone will translate it. 3. Picture supports. Involve your newcomer in the test review and provide picture support and/or scaffold support. The state assessment they will take serves as a baseline data for where they are at. So give them support to feel successful. BONUS TIP - Remember that you and your students are not defined by test scores whether they are good scores or bad. It’s not a black and white scenario.
